The Process
The inspiration behind these pieces was the shed skin of a snake after molting. The enticing and intricate patterns, if successfully emulated, make snake skin patterns a fashion staple. To obtain the see through appearance I start with translucent polymer clay. After conditioning, the translucent clay is rolled up into thin snake-like strings of clay and are wrapped with a flat sheet of white and pearlescent clay. The white enclosed snake-like strings are then carefully compressed into a cane multiple times. I don't stop there! To create the slab from which the shapes are cut out from, the cane is sliced up. The sliced pieces are then organized and adhered into one large slab. Shapes are then cut out using my collection of shape cutters.
Once baked, each piece is sanded, hand drilled, assembled, photographed and packaged by me. To learn more about the making of each product, please visit my instagram page: @virauful.
